The MacroPro Philosophy

PRESERVATION. EDUCATION. INNOVATION.

Natural history collections hold immeasurable cultural, historical, and scientific value. However, they will not last forever. Specialist digital imaging preserves important specimens at ultra-high resolutions to ensure we always have a record of them.

By increasing the ease of access to natural history collections through innovative educational resources, I hope to inspire interest in the smaller things in nature.

To Preserve

It is now more important than ever to ensure species are digitally preserved for future generations.

To Educate

I work with schools and other educational institutions to educate and create interest in the fascinating world of insects.

To Innovate

Developing novel processing techniques and equipment are vital for taking image quality to the next level.

Ed Hall - Creator

I created MacroPro Photography first and foremost for the digital preservation of valuable natural history around the UK at risk of degradation. As time has progressed, I have noticed a huge interest in this type of photography for its artistic qualities as much as its scientific merit.

I’ve always had a keen interest in entomology and I worked in an insect evolutionary ecology research group at the University of Leeds from 2016-2019. My ties to academia have been very helpful for developing an international network of educational, scientific and charitable organisations.

I have been developing and practicing novel macro photographic methods for over 5 years on a number of projects. Currently I am working closely with Leeds Museums and Galleries curators to produce images of their entomology collections for preservation and educational use.
